The ‘Rivers of Thirst’ Songwriting Competition is an extraordinary initiative aimed at capturing the raw and powerful narratives of drought conditions in Western Australia. As our state faces the ongoing challenges of water scarcity, this competition provides a platform for songwriters to express the resilience, hardships, and hopes of those living in rural and regional areas through the universal language of music.
Participants are invited to submit an original song that reflects the theme of drought. This opportunity is open to all residents of rural and regional Western Australia. The songwriter doesn’t need to perform the song themselves. If they're not a singer, another artist can perform the piece, allowing for more collaboration and ensuring that every songwriter’s creativity can be recognised, regardless of their performance ability.
The winner and/or the performing artist will have the honour of presenting their song at the 2025 Boyup Brook Country Music Muster, a significant event in Western Australia’s cultural calendar, held on 14-16 February 2025. This event provides an unparalleled platform to share your message and music with a broader audience, highlighting the vital issue of drought and its impact on our communities. The winning songwriter will receive a prize of $2,000 and runner-up songwriter $1,000.
This competition is held in collaboration with Southern Forest Arts and is generously funded through the Foundation of Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR) and the Regional Arts Fund.
We encourage all eligible songwriters to participate and contribute their voices to this important conversation. Let your music tell the story of our land, our struggles, and our strength.
Nominations for the ‘Rivers of Thirst’ Songwriting Competition will close on Friday, 29th November 2024.
